Christmas Eve in Czech Silesia

Christmas Eve in the Hlučín Region

Hlučínsko belonged to Prussia until 1920, and its Christmas Eve — vilija — was a full fast day. Supper was pea soup, semolina, porridge, cabbage with butter and dried pears in water, with the Christmas sauce called brija or maczka: fried vegetables, plum butter, nuts, almonds, raisins, gingerbread and spices, eaten with vánočka. Wafers with honey came last; carp arrived only later, in the better-off homes.

Try it at home

Make a Silesian Christmas sauce: simmer grated gingerbread with plum butter, raisins, chopped nuts and a splash of beer, and eat it with sweet bread.
