Christmas Eve in Bohemia
Christmas Eve in Kozácko (Tábor area)
Around Tábor a share of the Christmas food went to the cows and to the well, with the words “Studničko, studničko, dávám ti koledičku, abys nám dávala dobrou vodičku” — little well, here’s your Christmas share, give us good water. In Kloužovice the village servant blew his horn and made a long speech of good wishes under the window, and the farmer opened it and answered with set phrases of his own.
To read the harvest, bread and vánočka were wrapped in a cloth with a knife between them: if the blade rusted under the bread by Three Kings, the rye would fail.
Try it at home
Pour a little of your Christmas drink into the garden, a plant pot or the sink and say thank you for the water.
