Christmas Eve in Bohemia

Christmas Eve in Prácheňsko

Around Volyně two boys carolled with a bukač — a small keg with skin stretched over it and horsehair pulled with wet hands to make a drone — singing “Koledníci o půl noci…”. Around Blatná the stool of nine kinds of wood, for spotting witches at dawn mass, was begun on St Barbara’s Day and worked on a little each day until Christmas Eve.
