Christmas Eve in Bohemia

Christmas Eve in the Šumava foothills (Pošumaví)

Around Klatovy the better-off ate fish soup and fish “na černo” or “na modro”; poorer homes had roasted-flour soup, noodles with curd cheese or gingerbread, mushroom dumplings, buchtičky and černý kuba. Everyone ate muzika — dried plums and pears — and had to taste every dish, because each had a meaning. A white Christmas loaf that cracked in the oven foretold a death.

Boys bound the trees with straw at dawn, the shepherd blew his horn under every window, and the gifts were brought by the Jesulátko during the dawn mass: nuts, apples and sweets left on a plate in the window.

Make sure everyone tastes every dish on the table — in Pošumaví each one carried its own wish.
