Christmas Eve in Bohemia

Christmas Eve below Říp (Podřipsko)

In Podřipsko the peruchty came on Christmas Eve to frighten children: at Hrdly a black one and a white one, announced by a little bell. The black one asked who had an over-full stomach — who hadn’t fasted — so it could be taken away, while the white one sharpened a long knife. The children cried: “We’ve eaten nothing, we’re hungry!”

Around 1830 the supper was rice soup with carrot, then muzika — dried plums, pears and apples, well spiced — then vdolky with honey.
