From the old country to Illinois
Around 1900 Chicago was one of the largest Czech cities in the world. Families moved from Pilsen on the Lower West Side to “Czech California” in South Lawndale, then out to Cicero and Berwyn, building Sokol halls, lodges and the Bohemian National Cemetery as they went.
In city flats the carp sometimes still spent its last days in the bathtub before Christmas Eve.
