Czech America · Wisconsin
From the old country to Wisconsin
Wisconsin was the first Czech America: in 1860 more Czechs lived here than in any other state. They settled in Milwaukee, Racine and Caledonia, and in Manitowoc and Kewaunee counties, and started the first Czech newspapers and Czech-language schools in the country.
Families who came this early carried the older Bohemian Christmas — a fasting day, a meatless supper of soups, peas and dried fruit, and Christmas Eve as the evening that mattered.
