Christmas Eve in Moravia

Christmas Eve in Horňácko

On Christmas Eve night the girls of Horňácko went “na zbrody”: with a jug they visited every spring and stream around the village, taking a little water from each. Whoever washed in it would be “precious to the lads”.

Christmas Day was so holy that no fire was lit in the kitchen — everyone ate what had been cooked on Christmas Eve, beds stayed unmade and floors unswept until the afternoon.

Try it at home

Cook enough on Christmas Eve to eat cold on Christmas Day, and keep the 25th free of cooking — the Horňácko way.

Part of Slovácko (Moravian Slovakia).
