Christmas Eve in Moravia

Christmas Eve in the Moravian Kopanice

In Starý Hrozenkov a loaf lay on each corner of the table, wheat was strewn in the middle and a round koláč with a hole in it set on top; then the housewife “whipped” everyone with the tablecloth so they would be precious. After supper one woman climbed into the loft and poured barley down the chimney; the woman below caught it in her apron and asked what she was pouring — “Vajcá!” (Eggs!) — and the barley went to the hens so they would lay.

The first koláč out of the oven was carried to the cattle on a sieve with garlic, onion and parsley.
