Christmas Eve in Moravia

Christmas Eve in Podluží

In Podluží a straw basket of every grain, with parsley, onion and garlic, sat under the tablecloth, the serving bowl on top — and a little of every dish was put under the soup.

Between eleven and midnight, “when God’s blessing pours over the earth”, people fetched water believed to turn into wine at that hour: whoever drew it could drink it, but must not give it away.

Try it at home

Hide a little dish of grain, garlic and parsley under the tablecloth, beneath the soup tureen.

Part of Slovácko (Moravian Slovakia).
