Christmas Eve in Moravia

Christmas Eve in Lachia (Lašsko)

Around Příbor a ploughshare lay under the Christmas Eve table; everyone rested their feet on it and began eating at the same moment — and there were meant to be nine soups. From St Lucy’s Day a little wood was shaved off a wooden spoon each day; on Christmas Eve a hole was drilled through it and every dish stirred with it, and at dawn mass, looking through the hole, you would recognise the witches. The animals’ eyes were smeared with honey so they would not ache.

In Brušperk the leftovers were thrown into the river where it did harm, “so that it would not harm”, and fish bones laid on the banks.

Try it at home

Put something heavy and iron under the table and ask everyone to rest their feet on it and start eating together — the Lachian way of keeping the family strong.
